Scholarships & Grants

The University of Melbourne offers scholarships with various eligibility criteria and benefits.

You can explore all available scholarships, grants and bursaries administered by The University of Melbourne on the dedicated scholarships page.

To be eligible for Indigenous-specific supports, you need to provide documents to confirm your eligibility. It is important that you understand your responsibility to provide us with these documents.

When you apply to study at The University of Melboure, you will automatically be considered for a range of scholarship. The information you provide in your application will be used to determine your eligibility for these scholarships, such as the Narrm Scholarship. If you are interested in applying for a specific scholarship, you are encouraged to review its application process.

Important: The University of Melbourne does not use the VTAC scholarship application to assess eligibility. Instead, you will be considered for scholarships based on your VTAC and SEAS application if you are an undergraduate student.

When you are offered a scholarship, you will be contacted by the Scholarships team. It is important to regularly check your emails, if a scholarship offer lapses you may not receive support. Learn more about accepting your scholarship.

Some scholarships can be held concurrently. Review the conditions of your scholarship when you receive your offer.

Note: You cannot receive both the Melbourne Chancellor’s Scholarship and Narrm Scholarship.

  • Can I defer a scholarship?

Scholarships have their own conditions regarding deferral. Review the conditions of your scholarship when you receive your offer.

  • I was not awarded a scholarship even though I met the eligibility requirements?

It is important to understand the selection criteria of the specific scholarship as this may provide additional information about how it is awarded.

If you believe you should have received a scholarship and did not, please contact the Scholarships Team including as much information as possible.

  • When will I receive my scholarship?

Scholarship benefits can only be activated once you have:

    • Accepted your scholarship offer
    • Commenced your course
    • Updated your bank details
    • Met the conditions of your scholarship (as specified in your scholarship offer).

Payments are made via the University’s Payroll on set pay days and will appear as a University of Melbourne salary on your bank statement.

The University does not provide payslips for scholarship payments.

  • Will my scholarship impact my ABSTUDY payment?

Most scholarships provided by the University of Melbourne are equity or merit-based scholarships. Payments from these scholarships are exempt from the Centrelink income test as long as they are less than the Centrelink payment threshold. Any scholarship amounts over the threshold may affect your Centrelink payment rate.

Commonwealth scholarships, or scholarships that provide a tuition fee remission or payments to a third party (e.g. an accommodation provider), are not considered income for Centrelink purposes.

If you have applied for or are receiving Centrelink benefits, you are obliged to notify Centrelink of any scholarships you have received. We will not do this on your behalf.

If you are asked for a scholarship reference number, you can fill the field with your student ID number.

If you are asked for evidence of your scholarship(s), we can provide you with a letter including the details of your current (active) scholarships. You can request one by submitting an online enquiry.
